Principal's Message

Welcome to Harlan Community High School, home of the Cyclones.

We are a community school that includes the towns of Corley, Defiance, Earling, Harlan, Jacksonville, Panama, Portsmouth, and Westphalia. We are a school of approximately 525 students located in southwest Iowa. Academically our students rank above the state average in both the ACT and Iowa Assessment tests. The HCSD adopted a 1:1 technology initiative starting with the 2012 school year. Student involvement is a key component of our educational success. We have won a state leading 13 football championships, state volleyball championship in 2013 and 2014, won 6 State Jazz Championships including 4 straight from 2008-2011, won the 2011 State of Iowa “School of Character” Award, and won the outstanding High School/Middle School Vocational Agriculture program in Iowa in 2011. Our students compete in 17 varsity sporting events, Band, Vocal, Speech and can belong to over 20 clubs or organizations. Public education in Iowa and the United States must now prepare our students for global competition. Our focus is on student centered classroom and inquiry as a strategy to meet tomorrow's challenges. As a school system, we must continue to ask ourselves “Can we get better?” I believe we have educators at HCHS that will meet the challenge of continual improvement, staying true to our motto, joined as one, we will get the job done.
